The Archway Garden

Making an Entrance

Before this installation, the client had been growing in a single 4' x 8' standing raised bed. This new design expanded that experience into a 160-square-foot kitchen garden created for the whole family to grow, harvest, and enjoy.

Two custom L-shaped Corten steel raised beds fit together within a rectangular footprint, creating an intimate pathway through the garden. The layout makes generous use of the available space while keeping every growing area within easy reach. Gray granite stone underfoot complements the Corten as it develops its natural patina and ties the garden back to the warm tones of the home.

At either end of the pathway, matching arch trellises create a distinct entrance and exit. Beyond adding valuable vertical growing space, the arches bring balance to the garden and turn the simple act of walking in to harvest into a moment of its own. You enter beneath one arch, move through a garden overflowing with food and flowers, and leave beneath the other.

Inside, there is room for a little bit of everything, with both warm- and cool-season crops making the most of the 160 square feet throughout the growing season. The garden has quickly become a family affair, including a section reserved for one client's mother and her favorite lettuce variety. For a client who now enjoys a fresh-picked salad for lunch every day, the garden is as useful as it is beautiful.
